The nominator said: We are delighted to nominate Demi-Leigh Charlton in recognition of her outstanding contributions and remarkable growth since she joined Castle Trust Bank to begin her Customer Service Level 2 apprenticeship in July 2024.

Demi has consistently demonstrated professionalism and pride in her work, adheres to office etiquette and maintains a strong commitment to her responsibilities. Demi interacts with colleagues and management in a polite, respectful manner, creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Her delightful personality and strong work ethic make her a pleasure to manage.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Demi has shown forward-thinking by staying ahead of deadlines and managing her workload effectively. Demi has balanced her apprenticeship work with increasing her responsibilities in her role, handling a higher volume of emails while maintaining her commitment to quality. Demi’s proactive approach and dedication to continuous improvement have been key in helping her stay on track to meet expectations in both her apprenticeship and her daily role.

Demi is proactive in communicating any challenges and when faced with tasks or topics she is unsure about, Demi does not hesitate to seek additional training to improve her skills, reaching outside her team to our L&D function to arrange bespoke one-to-one training. Her willingness to ask for help and take the initiative to learn, demonstrates her dedication to both personal and professional growth.

Three months after Demi joined Castle Trust Bank, her role was involved in a structure change, where we combined two of our contact centres individually servicing different customers. The structure change is an opportunity for the bank to provide an even better and more efficient service to our customers, whilst upskilling our customer-facing colleagues to serve multiple customers across different channels. Demi has been extremely positive with the changes, embracing the new opportunity it brings to her role and the breadth she has to service a multitude of Castle Trust Bank’s customers. Demi’s positive outlook on the structure change exceeded our expectations for those involved and she has been a role model to her peers on displaying the right attitude and enthusiasm of the exciting opportunity it brings.

Demi joined with no experience in the finance industry and has shown remarkable growth in her confidence and knowledge. Demi has completed her apprenticeship work to a high standard, passing her assignment at distinction level and receiving positive feedback from the provider.

Demi has consistently met all expectations, demonstrating that recruiting an apprentice into our customer-facing function was the right decision for the bank. Our experience with Demi has instilled confidence and optimism regarding future apprentices we may bring into this area of the business.

Demi has truly found her feet within the role, passing her probation in January and becoming a valued and reliable member of the team. Demi’s ability to meet deadlines, produce high-quality work, and maintain a consistently upbeat attitude has been praised by many, highlighting her strong work ethic and what an asset she is to Castle Trust Bank.

The nominator said: Kyle is currently training with us a student nurse. He joined the team as an animal care assistant when we opened in August 2023 and has been truly invested in the business ever since. It became immediately obvious to Jamie, Emily and Ruth, our head nurse, that Kyle was an asset to the practice and a student nursing apprenticeship was offered to him when it became clear that nursing was his passion.

Kyle has truly applied himself to his student nursing role, and strives to go above and beyond on a day today basis. He works exceptionally hard both at work and also in his studies. We are incredibly proud of the excellent progress he has made so far in his practical training and college assessments, achieving a distinction in his latest exam. Whether assisting in surgeries, administering medication, or providing animal care, he has shown he is ready to tackle real-world challenges.

Kyle’s approach to both clients and patients is caring and empathetic. Even in the most stressful situation, he is unfailingly polite and calm. His attention to detail means that he always gives the best possible care to our patients, treating them as if they were his own pets. Kyle has also worked an out-of-hours veterinary support role to gain more experience and this has highlighted his commitment to the veterinary industry and has served to enhance the care that he provides.

Tallulah has an exceptional ability to connect with the clients, ensuring they feel comfortable and valued. She has received consistent praise for her attentive and professional approach, always taking the time to listen to clients’ needs and providing personalised, tailored recommendations. Moreover, Tallulah is proactive in assisting other team members and keeping the salon organised, ensuring smooth operations on a day to day basis.

Tallulah is still an active apprentice and has shown exceptional growth in her role, making her a perfect candidate for the Basingstoke Inspire Awards Apprentice of the Year.

The nominator said: We are a producer and marketer of cider made using the tradition wild fermentation method of production using no added sulphites, chemicals or preservatives. In addition to our 5% drink, we also have a 0.5% low alcohol version which is made in the same way as our alcoholic one. No refined sugars are used in the process. The sugars are fructose as we use the concentrate of the original juice to enhance the flavour.

Our strategy is to be stocked in as many independently owned non-chain pubs in Hampshire where the owners have the flexibility to choose local produce and be able to sell at premium prices. This is where our main margin lies. We are also looking to be present in the many high-end farm shops in the county for our alcoholic and non-alcoholic blends. The ultimate goal is to be THE premium cider of Hampshire both on tap and in bottle for the two drinks that we produce.

The nominator said: The Hampshire Vet is an independent small animal veterinary practice that provides the highest standard of personalised first opinion veterinary care. Emily and Jamie opened The Hampshire Vet in October 2022, initially as a mobile clinic visiting clients at home. Whilst operating as a mobile clinic we developed purposed designed a 2500 square foot premises which opened in September 2023. We have developed a skilled team of 25 vets, nurses and administrative staff. We are delighted to have already reached our 3-5 year goal of providing emergency out of hours and overnight inpatient care, a unique service to Basingstoke.

When setting up The Hampshire Vet, one of our core aims was to create a supportive environment where all employees felt happy to come to work. Veterinary professionals are high-achieving individuals, driven to work to a high standard and provide exceptional care. We have structured our working day to accommodate this as much as possible, ensuring 20-minute consultation times, appropriate time to perform investigations and structured time throughout the day to ensure that client communication and administrative tasks are manageable during the working day. Regular practice meetings allow staff feedback, ensuring changes are collaborative, and staff feel listened to. Jamie and Emily are keen for the staff to share the success of the practice, and have implemented AXA private health care at the request of the team. Mental health is an important issue within the veterinary profession, as vets are four times more likely to die by suicide than other professionals. One of our veterinary nurses, Molly, feels passionately about promoting mental wellbeing and has taken on this role within the practice. Molly trained as a Mental Health First Aider with St. Johns Ambulance and subsequently set up a staff wellbeing service for The Hampshire Vet. She introduced welcome bags for all staff, containing a journal, a healthy snack, camomile tea, stress toys and a keyring with the telephone number of a veterinary mental health charity. The Hampshire Vet offers weekly wellbeing drop-in sessions with Molly which all staff are encouraged to attend. Given the rapid growth of the team we have signed up two further team members to train as Mental HealthFirst Aiders. Molly produces a monthly newsletter discussing mental health and wellbeing. The practice also facilitates a WhatsApp chat group for neurodivergent employees. The practice offers all staff an Employee Assistance Programme provided by Bupa, giving access to a helpline and counselling. A food bank is provided in the staff room, providing basic provisions and sanitary products, which all employees are welcome to help themselves to. A wellbeing cubby-hole contains resource folders with charity information, neurodiversity support, CBT and self-help techniques.

The nominator said: CarFest is the UK’s largest family fundraising festival, founded by presenter Chris Evans in 2012, and is dedicated to raising millions for children’s charities. Set across 500 spectacular acres at Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire, this vibrant event combines seven magical festival sites in one unforgettable weekend: CarFest, FoodFest, KidsFest, SpaFest, StarFest, RetroFest, and an incredible music line-up. With over 30,000 visitors a day enjoying more than 40 live music acts, 100+ interactive activities, and 200+ celebrities and experts, CarFest delivers multi-generational entertainment that creates lifelong memories while supporting vital causes. So much more than just cars, CarFest represents family fun and philanthropy.

CarFest isn’t just another festival – it’s the family fun and huge hearts of both visitors and our team that makes a difference. We’ve grown and evolved constantly, but we’ve never forgotten why Chris Evans started this journey: to create unforgettable memories while helping children who need it most. Our past year has been incredible. We broke attendance records, raised more money than ever for charity, and added exciting new elements to the festival – all while navigating the rollercoaster of the current economy.

Our “seven festivals in one” approach has become something of a gold standard that others seek to replicate. We’ve shown how you can transform a car and music event into a massive, inclusive celebration of everything families love, while making the business stronger each year. What we’re most proud of is proving that making money and making a difference can go hand-in-hand. And now we’re spreading our support to more local charities, creating further connections in the Hampshire community.

Sustainable Champion Award

And the finalists are:

The nominator said: We are an architectural practice that delivers a variety of developments across London and the South East, ranging from urban regeneration to academic new-builds. We are futurists. We welcome the challenge of designing not just for today, but with tomorrow in mind. We are passionate about problem-solving. It’s our job to help our clients through complexity. No project is too big a challenge, and no problem beyond us to solve. Our experience spans housing, education, masterplanning, culture, community spaces, workplace and heritage.

In 2022, upon realising the full extent of damage to the planet caused by the built environment, Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt set in motion a range of sustainability initiatives, starting with the creation of a new ‘Head of Sustainability’ role, to be filled by a Certified Passive House Designer. By the end of 2024, all our actions had been successfully introduced. Our proudest achievement has been developing and launching our own comprehensive project sustainability design tool, termed the CSET’ or Client Sustainability Engagement Tool. Originally developed as an internal project review tool, we recognised the demand for an architect-led sustainability consultancy service and transitioned the tool to a client-facing digital interface. In 2024, we offered this service on two pilot projects and, following very positive results, we are now looking to scale up this service onto more projects. The architectural industry cannot begin to evolve on the sustainability front until businesses can easily deploy and use tools like the CSET. What we have done, we hope, will facilitate accelerated improvements across the built industry.

With buildings and construction responsible for over 25% of the UK’s carbon emissions, we needed to totally change our approach to designing buildings. The introduction of our Passivhaus consultancy service has ensured projects benefit from ongoing sustainability focus. Where we offer this service, we also carry out additional performance analysis to demonstrate compliance with the ultra-low energy Passivhaus Standard, showing reductions of 75-90% in heating energy use, when compared to a typical UK new build. With construction costs soaring, our clients often struggle to justify sustainable design enhancements without supporting performance data. Recognising this, we have invested in upskilling our team to enable the use of a wider range of data-driven design techniques to back-up our sustainable design decisions on projects. This is supported by a wide-ranging climate literacy programme to bring our whole team’s knowledge to a higher level to improve everyday sustainability advice and decision making.

Whilst our carbon analysis tells us that the carbon emissions from our business operations are small compared to buildings we help design (estimated to be less than 0.05%), it’s crucial for us to set an example, particularly where it illustrates the improvements we recommend to our clients. As such, 2025 will see us move into a newly retrofitted, energy efficient building. Fitting out this space will test our ability to carry out whole life carbon assessments. We also plan to use natural bio-based materials as well as refurbished and recycled finishes and furniture. We have just completed certification for ISO 14001 which recognises the ambitious environmental policy and development targets we have implemented. With all these initiatives, we have been calculating our carbon emissions since 2022, managing an impressive 20% drop in carbon emissions intensity in 2023. Following continued improvements in 2024, we are expecting to see a further drop in 2025.

The nominator said: BCoT’s commitment to sustainability is defined by a multi-faceted approach to bridging the critical skills gap in green technologies. Recognising the urgent need for a skilled workforce to drive our region’s transition to a net-zero future, we’ve made strategic investments across multiple sectors. Our cornerstone is the Green Energy Centre, a state-of-the-art facility providing practical, hands-on training in renewable energy for both students and local businesses. The newly completed Centre allows students and local businesses to become equipped with the knowledge and skills in renewable technologies such as air source heat pumps, solar thermal, photovoltaic systems and rainwater reuse. The facility was supported with a £150,000 investment boost from the Department for Education as part of the Strategic Development Fund (SDF) and includes equipment to demonstrate and teach how to install and maintain ‘green’ technologies.

As Steve Gilder, our Head of Construction, emphasises: “The ambition to reach net zero and to be more sustainable means the construction industry is an ever-changing landscape, with new technologies being regularly introduced. It is therefore imperative that we equip our students with the skills, information and confidence to meet the demands of the industry. The new Green Energy Centre will provide an informative introduction to all things ‘green’, retrofit and net zero within the construction sector and allow our students to work within a state-of-the-art environment in which they can learn and develop their skills. We also look forward to welcoming local employers to the Centre, who want to train their staff in the skills necessary to meet net zero targets.”

Extending our reach beyond construction, we’ve also established the Electric Vehicle (EV) training centre, the first of its kind in the South East, to address the burgeoning EV market. The courses come at a time when the need for people to upskill in emerging green automotive technologies has never been greater. There is now widespread recognition that road transport is one of the largest contributors to UK greenhouse gas emissions at over 20%, making it essential to reduce if the UK is to achieve its net zero target by 2050. In response, the government plans to phase out the sale of all new diesel and petrol cars to increase the uptake of Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles (ULCVs).

To ensure accessibility and flexibility, we’ve also complemented our onsite provision with a comprehensive series of FREE online and distance learning courses, covering essential topics such as environmental sustainability, climate change awareness, retrofit and specialised areas like rainwater and greywater harvesting, so that local individuals and organisations can develop their green skills without cost and promote sustainability in the workplace. We’ve also recently launched targeted Skills Bootcamps, providing intensive, rapid upskilling in key areas like Photovoltaic installation.

This comprehensive, dual-sector strategy – encompassing traditional courses, distance learning, and intensive bootcamps – demonstrates our unwavering commitment to empowering individuals and businesses with the skills needed to thrive in the green economy. We’ve made significant strategic investments, secured vital funding, and fostered strong collaborative partnerships with other colleges, ensuring our impact extends across multiple sectors and contributes directly to our region’s sustainability goals.

The nominator said: St. Michael’s Hospice is a charity that provides support to people across North Hampshire who have a life-limiting illness, are facing the end of life, or are experiencing bereavement. Since early 2023, we have made significant progress in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions through a comprehensive energy and carbon reduction project. We conducted a thorough energy review and implemented a real-time energy measurement system across our fully electric site. This allowed us to capture detailed data from 50 circuits, identifying areas of unnecessary consumption. As a result, we achieved a 23% reduction in energy use from mid-April to mid-September 2023 compared to the previous year by taking actions such as switching off underfloor heating during warmer months. By implementing further measures such as a 60kW PV system, we have reduced our overall energy usage by over 40%, leading to a 44% decrease in costs and a 41% reduction in carbon emissions. These achievements demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and financial prudence, setting a benchmark for hospices.

Looking ahead, our goal is to reduce our reliance on grid electricity by increasing on-site renewable energy generation. Our long-term modelling indicates that by transitioning to renewable heating and maximising solar generation, we could achieve a 65-75% improvement in energy efficiency, carbon footprint, and cost savings. These efforts align with NHS and government targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 67% by 2035, reinforcing our role as a leader in environmental sustainability and enhancing the care we provide to our community.

The Hospice’s Operations Director, Chris Griffiths, shares the energy usage with key parties. These range from sharing with staff the impact and reduce in Hospice costs during monthly forums, as well as board members, senior leadership teams, suppliers and supporters via our Christmas appeal calendar.

As a local charity, we focus on supporting our community – and that includes doing what is best for the environment. The installation of our solar panels and reduction of our energy consumption is the first in our sustainable strategy. Our goals include becoming the first Hospice to achieve an “A” Energy Rating, continuing to reduce energy costs for the Hospice and reducing the carbon footprint of our charity retail shops. Like the Hospice, we want to ensure that the North Hampshire environment and support for end-of-life, palliative care and bereavement services are here now and in the future for our local community.

Jack said: “I am a 27-year-old director of an architectural firm and I have been blessed to take an early lead on the regeneration of the Basingstoke and Deane town centre. It is with great pride that I have personally been commissioned in the past year to undertake numerous large-scale projects to design and oversee the construction, such as:

*The ever-thriving Post Box Sports Bar, previously the Post Office, numbers 5-7 London Street, a modern industrial sports bar that is never lacking in atmosphere and has become a staple in the top of town and Basingstoke.

*The old Argos unit, 1 Old Basing Malls, a bespoke supermarket that will rival even the largest vendors in the town centre.

*The previous Royal Bank of Scotland, I am currently converting and extending parts of the building to form 18 tailored residential units, with a mixed-use unit on the ground floor for the next occupants.

*The Royal Oak, Basingstoke. Another community-based project, in which we assisted in realising the potential for the building and are currently designing additional renovations to carry them into further success.

“Being born and raised in Basingstoke, I am very proud in what I have been able to do for the community as a whole and making new history for the area. The majority of my commercial projects this year have been for local, independent companies, which has brought me endless joy, assisting others to realise their potential. I intend to take this company and brand and expand to a much higher level.”

Jade owns JM Cleaning, a cleaning company offering domestic and commercial services in and around Basingstoke. It is a cleaning company providing 5-star cleaning services in the Basingstoke area. More specifically we now work with vulnerable clients who have gotten themselves in a difficult position and need help to completely reset, declutter and clean their homes. Working alongside social services, estate agents & more we are able to bring the vision to life.

Jade said: “I am 28-years-old. I am a mum of 3 before anything. I started my business in 2019 with nothing more than a Henry hoover and some B&M cleaning products. I have slowly but surely built the business from the ground to now a 6-figure business with 8 staff and me. Over the years I have developed rapports with estate agents, commercial buildings, social workers, nhs discharge staff and more to enable me to offer more services and expand the business. I work alongside carpet and oven cleaning companies building professional relationships with them to again be able to offer more services.

“We are the chosen company for many estate agents around Basingstoke. We service over 120 domestic homes every single week, with a turnover in excess of £4,000 a week.”

The nominator said: Open 7 days a week, Barnsgrove is a private members’ club specialising in workspaces, fitness, wellbeing and downtime. Custom-built by Greywell farmers Jo and James Butler, Barnsgrove has the perfect balance of practicality and aesthetics, with sustainable materials used wherever possible in its creation. Designed for Hampshire locals, Barnsgrove houses the clubhouse with terrace, café and bar; fitness studio; multi-functional gym; private offices, resident desks and hot-desking facilities; meeting/event spaces; and wellness treatment rooms. A programme of events includes themed suppers with guest chefs, networking sessions, talks from business leaders and experts and fitness classes in-house and around the farm.

In creating Barnsgrove, last year’s biggest undertaking on our farm, we worked with a number of talented local craftsmen and women to attain the high spec we set ourselves on this 20,000 sq. ft. newbuild. Providing various spaces for Hampshire locals to exercise, eat, drink, socialise, pamper and work was our goal and we’ve achieved this – despite a complex journey from concept to completion via an elaborate planning process. As for the build, we’ve created employment opportunities for locals in the everyday running of the club and continue to strongly support local businesses, be they suppliers (food, drink, services, building and decoration materials), members, or experts for our events programme. Wherever possible, we’ve employed low carbon initiatives throughout the club including the roof’s solar panelling and a biomass heating system (using woodchips supplied from a neighbouring farm). We’re planting a tree on the farm for every new adult member. Our waste is recycled through Reading-based Hubba (who have a commitment to delivering zero waste to landfill) and our chef consultant, Rosie Smith cooks seasonally with local produce whenever possible, being a fervent supporter of Hampshire’s ingredients. Our dedication to Hampshire and the local community is steadfast and continues to grow.

Our strategy is to be stocked in as many independently owned non chain pubs in Hampshire where the owners have the flexibility to chose local produce and be able to sell at premium prices. This is where our main margin lies. We are also looking to be present in the many high end farm shops in the county for our alcoholic and non alcoholic blends. The ultimate goal is to THE premium cider of Hampshire both on tap and in bottle for the two drinks that we produce.

The nominator said: The Yard Hampshire is a charming café in Chilton Candover, offering delicious, locally sourced food and drinks in a warm and welcoming countryside setting. More than just a café, we are a vibrant community hub, hosting a variety of events, from pop-up dining experiences and live music to creative workshops and seasonal markets. With a focus on great hospitality, quality produce, and a passion for bringing people together, The Yard Hampshire has become a go-to destination for both locals and visitors seeking a unique and inviting rural experience.

The Yard Hampshire plays an active role in supporting and enhancing the rural economy by focusing on local sourcing, fostering community engagement, and creating economic opportunities for other businesses. We prioritise working with local suppliers to ensure our food and drinks are of the highest quality and sustainably sourced. By purchasing ingredients and products from nearby farms, bakeries, and artisan producers, we contribute to the success and sustainability of local businesses. This support extends to our gelato room, where we feature handmade gelato sourced from local dairy farms, further promoting the region’s agricultural industry.

As a growing business in a rural area, we provide local employment opportunities and support the rural job market. Our pop-up markets and events provide a platform for local artisans, makers, and small businesses to showcase and sell their products. This not only gives them a chance to gain exposure but also helps draw visitors to the area, benefiting other local businesses and encouraging spending within the community. By hosting a variety of events – from family-friendly activities to seasonal markets and pop-up dining experiences – we help to increase foot traffic to the area, benefiting other local businesses. These events provide valuable exposure for independent creators, support rural arts and culture, and foster a sense of community that strengthens the local economy. In sum, The Yard Hampshire is dedicated to supporting and boosting the rural economy by creating an environment where local businesses can thrive, visitors can enjoy the best of the countryside, and the community can come together.

The judges said:

An incredibly difficult task to pick the Winner of Winners from a high-quality field. Each of the winners should be proud of their success at INSPIRE 2025.

St. Michael’s Hospice is an extraordinary organisation that touches the lives of so many people in our community. Their work goes far beyond the walls of the hospice itself – they provide care, comfort, and dignity to people at the most difficult times in their lives. The dedication of their team – staff, volunteers, and supporters – is simply inspiring.

What sets St. Michael’s Hospice apart is not just what they do, but how they do it. Rather than trying to get more donations to cover escalating energy costs they devised a plan to reduce their energy whilst still providing the same care  as a hospice. They reduced their energy consumption by over 40% leading to a 44% reduction in costs and 41% reduction in carbon emissions.  They lead with compassion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

This award recognises their outstanding contribution, not just as a healthcare provider, but as a vital, values-driven organisation making a meaningful difference every single day. Congratulations to St. Michael’s Hospice – you are a beacon of hope, and a most deserving Winner of Winners. We salute you.
