Manufacturing success with local beginnings
With recognised expertise in component design and system engineering, LG Motion is one of the UK's leading specialist motion engineering companies supplying motion products to professional organisations and institutes throughout Europe. Formed back in 2004, since then this small manufacturing company has seen substantial growth and now has an impressive client list including BAE, Aardman Animations, Rutherford Appleton, Nokia and Imperial College with exports making up 20% of sales.
Basingstoke’s economy is surprisingly diverse, with manufacturing making up 13% of the Basingstoke’s employment compared to 9% in the south east as whole. Companies like LG Motion demonstrate that Basingstoke can be a very successful location for manufacturing.
Gary Livingstone, Managing Director, brought up in Basingstoke, is keen to play his part in encouraging the development of the manufacturing sector. “We want to work with local suppliers, where there are cost and convenience advantages to both parties.”
He has also making a long term commitment to developing specialist skills by taking on apprentices through BCOT.
“We are very pleased with our apprentices – and it’s important to us to train up local youngsters that can see a long term future here, all our staff live close to work as we believe this helps all of us keep the work/life balance right and we have always recruited staff locally” he continues.
LG Motion’s recent success was confirmed when they won two awards at Basingstoke’s INSPIRE 08 Business Awards – Entrepreneur of the Year and Business of the Year.
