Local businesses are being encouraged to have their say on a bid to become a North Hampshire and M3 Corridor Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is staging a consultation event on Thursday 19 August from 2 to 4pm at the Barcelo Basingstoke Country Hotel.

The event is aimed at local businesses in this area and will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the LEP and what it means in real terms to local businesses, while also giving them an opportunity to have their say on the proposal for North Hampshire and M3 corridor area.

The event has been organised in response to a proposal by the Government to create LEPs as a possible replacement for regional development agencies, such as the South East England Development Agency.

To demonstrate an interest in becoming an LEP, proposals must be submitted by 6 September and the borough council is keen to speak to as many businesses as possible in preparation for this submission.

Since councillors agreed to take forward an expression of interest for a North Hampshire based LEP on 15 July, many businesses have already come forward to back this approach which has also been supported by Hart District Council, the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses for Hampshire and Isle of Wight.

Leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Andrew Finney said: “It is important that local business people have the opportunity to learn more about LEPs and have their say on the proposal for the North Hampshire area. During this event we want to discuss the benefits of actually having an LEP and why it is important for businesses to get involved.”

Cllr Finney added: “The LEP is about trying to make sure we are best placed for the businesses that we have got and to attract inward investment, to ensure that the economy in the area continues to be vibrant and grow.”

People wishing to attend the event are required to book a place by emailing business@basingstoke.gov.uk

During the event attendees will hear from Tim Colman, chairman of the North Hampshire Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and John Copley, chief executive of FAC – Farnborough Aerospace Consortium.

Those people unable to attend but wishing to pledge their support can fill in a form on the council's website at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/business/support/lep

People wishing to discuss the North Hampshire LEP can also contact Business Relationships Manager Natalie Wigman on 01256 845692 or email her on Natalie.wigman@basingstoke.gov.uk

Join Destination Basingstoke's on line poll on the best area for a LEP to cover.

Plans to create a new look shopping centre will get underway when work begins on The Malls refurbishment next week.

Wates Construction Ltd will be moving into the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council owned shopping centre on Monday 16 August to start work on the £5.9m scheme.

The exciting plans will see the outdated shopping centre given a major facelift. This will include removing the existing canopies and installing a clear roof canopy that protects the centre from bad weather, but still allows natural light and air to circulate. In addition the whole shopping centre will be repaved and new shop fronts installed.

However, the biggest transformation will be outside along Alencon Link where a new landmark gateway entrance to The Malls will be created, along with paving and landscaping improvements. This will give a more desirable first impression of the town when people arrive from the railway station.

As part of the works a £300,000 programme of improvements – funded by developer contributions - will also be made to Alencon Link including:

Carriageway and footway improvements on the southern side of Alencon Link to improvement access,

Providing a three bus lay-by with raised kerbs

New state of the art bus shelters.

All of the shops will remain open throughout the duration of the refurbishment, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2011.

Cabinet Member for Finance and Property Cllr James Lewin said:
“This is an exciting time for The Malls and for the borough as a whole. This refurbishment has been a long time coming and was certainly a priority for us when we bought out St Modwen’s share in the shopping centre earlier in the year.

“While we have put plans in place to minimise disruption and disturbance to our residents, shoppers and shop-tenants, there will inevitably be some degree of nuisance because the shopping centre must remain open throughout the works. We will be providing updates through our website to keep people informed of the progress and the site office in the Malls will be manned by Wates and open to people who may wish to speak to them.

Cllr Lewin added: “This work will significantly improve the shopping centre and bring it into the 21st Century. It will give our town a much more modern and pleasant place to shop, and it will also greatly improve the overall image of the area, thus progressing the council’s long term vision for the borough.”

Paul Nightingale, Project Manager, Wates Construction Ltd said: “Working in partnership with the council to deliver the town centre improvements, our aim is not only to ensure Basingstoke has the high quality facilities it deserves, but that it is business as usual for shopping at The Malls. Although we have regional offices in Basingstoke we will also have a site office manned throughout the day to enable people to speak with the project team should they have any queries. We will also be working closely with the council to ensure there are regular progress updates.”

To view the plans for the scheme or for updates and information on The Malls during the works visit www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/themalls.
