A European Success Story

Huawei Technologies is a leader in providing next generation telecommunications networks, and now serves 35 of the world's top 50 operators, along with over one billion users worldwide. The company is committed to providing innovative and customised products, services and solutions to create long-term value and growth potential for its customers.

To launch its business in the UK, Huawei chose Basingstoke as the location for its British headquarters.

Growing Workforce

Anyone who works at Huawei in Basingstoke will tell you that locating there has worked immensely well for the company. Huawei’s UK workforce currently have 350 employees and this upward trend is set to continue.

Huawei’s attention was first drawn to Basingstoke thanks to its status as a SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) ‘Diamond for Growth’, awarded due to the town’s potential for economic growth and the creation of prosperity. Basingstoke offered fertile ground for expansion into the UK, and was already home to a number of successful international companies.

With all the benefits of proximity to London without the high overheads, Huawei was able to find high-quality office space it could grow into.

As a business with bold ambitions, Huawei needed to be confident it could recruit skilled individuals, as many roles require technical and engineering-based expertise. Basingstoke’s central location within the south, close to key areas such as the M4 corridor and London, has been one of the fundamentals of its success in recruiting staff of the calibre required.

With larger government agencies such as SEEDA and UKTI having facilitated Huawei’s UK launch and operation in Basingstoke, the company still feels supported on a local level thanks to quarterly breakfast business meetings held by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, where ideas and issues can be shared.

The Best of Business & Leisure

Samuel Sun, Managing Director of Huawei UK, believes that Basingstoke offers more than just a highly desirable location for a business. He feels the pleasant environment, excellent infrastructure and strong support from the local council benefit the business tremendously.

The company has also worked hard to anchor itself in the community by taking part in initiatives such as providing ICT equipment for disabled pupils at a local school and sponsoring the annual Mayor’s Fireworks Fiesta, a public event whose proceeds go to charity.
